Legal Question in Employment Law in California

A friend was layed off 2 weeks ago and today my company hired a replacment to do the same job. Is this legal ? I only ask because i thought a company couldn't hire anyone for a year without first offering the job to the person who's layed off first.

There is no law that supports your belief. Most private employers may hire and fire at will. The real question is why did they fire your friend in the first place? If the reason was unlawful, only then, would he or she have a case.
