The very basic rules, in California, are that non-exempt employees must be paid at time and one-half their hourly rate of pay, for any hours worked more than 8 in a day, or more than 40 in a week. Double-time kicks in if they work more than 12 hours in a day or more than 8 hours worked on any 7th day of the workweek.
If you are a business owner, you should know that state law requires employers to post these rules, as well as others, in a conspicuous place in the workplace. You should contact the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement to obtain a poster of the wage laws and the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing for a copy of its mandatory postings. Or check with lawyers who advise employers to find out what other laws must be posted in the workplace.
