Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Hi:

I was forced out of a job recently where they were providing me with education assistance. Now they want there money back from the last 12 months. Do I have any legal defense?

Did you sign a contract that required you to pay back the money? If not, it is not clear what legal basis they would have to state a claim.
