Legal Question in Employment Law in California

if i hire a prime contractor who has no employees and no workers comp. the subcontractors that he hires; should they be licensed and have their own workers compensation? I dont want to be held liable as the owner of the property if an injury should befall anyone. whats the law with WC and subcontractors etc

Every employer of workers on the job must have their own WC or you risk liability. Every subcontractor must be licensed, or you risk liablity. If your prime contractor fails to require this, you should fire him.
