Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I was hired as an "at will" employee. I left for a bereavement leave of my grandmother, which the company paid me for. Upon my return to work, I was fired for the reason "lack of dedication" and not contacting them. The work was as an apparel designer. While, I was on leave, I prepared inspiration for Fall collection and was in constant communication with my counterpart and vendors. I was working through my leave. His reasoning does not seem fair.
