Holiday compensation

My wife works 40+ hours at a retail establishment. She is a ''full-time'' employee and has been employed with the company for well over a year. Her schedule is Tuesday through Saturday. The national holiday, Labor Day, falls on a Monday. The establishment is ''closed'' on Labor Day.

She enquired of her boss about another day off in lieu of Labor Day. The answer was no other day off. She enquired of her boss about pay for the holiday that she was not permitted to take. The answer was no pay.

Does my wife have any redress to, what seems to be, unfair treatment?
