Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Human resources involvement in firing or lying off an employee

If a supervisor tells you that your job is eliminated in the next two months and does not offer you another position. What are my rights as far as getting in writing, that I was either laid off or fired? Also, doesnt Human Resources need to be present as well as any union representation? What are the laws that regard Human resources and Union representation in a job lay off or termination?
