Legal Question in Employment Law in California
Independent contractor denied work out of home option
I was hired for a position as a telephone
psychic/counselor and opted to work out of my
home rather than the call center due to pay
differences ($.05 less per minute and $15/week
fee to work out of the call center) and the fact that it
was in an unsafe part of town.
I signed all the necessary contracts, had fulfilled
the proper telephone requirements and was
ready to begin working as soon as my work
number and information was entered. I called to
receive my access PIN and was denied access. I
was told that someone had worked for the same
company with the same phone number before
and therefore I would not be allowed to work from
home without changing my phone number, a
choice that would cost me more money.
This household has had this number for 1.5 years
and has never worked for this (or any related)
company before and I wanted to know if it was
legal for the company to discriminate against me
because someone else in the entire duration of
the phone number's 20-some year existence has
worked for this company. What, if anything, can I
do?
