Involuntary Change in Job Description
I've been working as a web designer/developer at a company for the past five months. We have completed all of the projects we've been working on and have no new work. There are two of us in our department and we were told that the only work we are to do now and going forward is to make 'cold calls' in an effort to gain new work. Is it legal for them to make such a radical change to our job description? We are trained designers, not sales professionals. Can we be legally fired for not perforning the cold calling tasks? Is our employer obligated to lay us off since there is no more work in our field/job description to do?

Yes they can do that. Be thankful they did. No, they are not obligated to lay you off but you are free to lay yourself off.
