Legal Question in Employment Law in California

job eliminated while on medical leave

I was employed by a small non-profit for 19 years. I was put on a medical leave in 2/01, and went on State Disability. I was under doctor's and psychiatrist care due to work-related stress and burn-out. Had been working almost 24/7 for 19 years and finally my body shut down.

I was receiving Disability, and my employer was still paying my health insurance.

In mid-June, I was called into the office and told the organization was restructuring and my position was being eliminated. So as of July 1, I would no longer be an employee and would be responsible for my own health insurance premium (through COBRA).

Is this legal for the organization to dismiss me while on a medical leave? Do I have any recourse? Paying the insurance premiums is a hardship since I am still on disability and under doctors' care.
