do i need a contractors license for work over $500.00 a week in California?

Yes you do.
Failure to perform services for over $500 without a license is not only a misdemeanor but it also takes away your rights to recover for your services from your customers. In other words, if you have a contract for $10,000 and your customer doesn't pay you, you won't be able to sue in court for that money if you don't have a license.
