Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Was laid off two days ago due to a "reduction in manning". I was the only one on the team to receive an "exceeds" rating on my reviews last year. An employee who was newer than me and who also lives down the street from me was able to keep his job. I always see my boss over his house as they have struck a strong friendship. As far as I can tell there was a lay-off list that had been returned for a second evaluation about a month ago. I think that my boss pushed to get me on the list because of his friendship. Every time my boss has a closed door meeting with me, he makes it clear that he will "deny" anything he says if I should talk about it. Do I have any grounds to take legal action?
