Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Laws on racial discrimination

What are my rights on racial and gender hiring? Especially when the hired person and I are of a different race. The reason for me asking is... I was interviewed and was quoted a salary that was not the going rate for someone with my experience and education. When I stated the amount on the market, I was told that they (The Company) could not start me off with that amount. However, I was informed that they offered someone of different race, fresh out of college with less experience than I have, the amount I originally asked for. Needless to mention, this person hired was hired with the salary of $2000 more than I requested. So, my question is, are there any laws against this?

Re: Laws on racial discrimination

It is illegal to discriminate in the terms of employment on the basis of race, if that is in fact, what occurred. You should contact an employment attorney in your area or the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing to make a complaint. You must do so within one year of the occurrence.

THIS IS NOT INTENDED TO BE LEGAL ADVICE. CONTACT AN ATTORNEY.
