Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Leaving a teaching position

I am a teacher in a California public school. I signed my contract with this school to teach in the 99-00 school year on June 1, 1999. Last week I was offered another job in another state and I wish to take it. Now, being so late in the year my present employer says that they will not accept my resigination. What legal recourse do they have over me. If I want to leave can't I just leave? Or can they they keep me from being leagally employed with another school district in another state? Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated. thank you!
