Legal Question in Employment Law in California
I left my company in California back in March after filing a sexual harrassment complaint against my boss, which as it turned out the head of HR and her boyfriend are very good friends with my boss (good ole boy network). I was getting bullied from that day on and couldn't take it any longer so I left. I moved back to Texas, the head of HR was calling my mother's cell phone constantly trying to find me, which my mother told her she didn't know where I was. The other day I decided to call the MAIN office and find out if they had a final check for me, they did. I received an envelope the other day, which was from the head of HR and my old office....it included the check....paperclipped to it were civil court papers that an ex had filed on me (personal matter), these papers were not only open, they had the cut out portion of the fed ex envelope that showed my old home address attached to it. The court was back in May, these papers were taken by my ex and handed to this lady in April. I know she made a copy of these because there are several staple holes in them and she wrote a note in the corner "forwarded 9/30/09". What right did she have to not only accept these papers but speak with someone about a personal matter that had nothing to do with the company and I hadn't even been there in months????? Can I do anything?? I am extremely upset, this was nobodys business except for mine and my ex.

Since you left in March, they should not have accepted legal documents from you in April. If so, you were not properly served with the legal papers.
If you didn't appear in court and an order of some sort was entered against you, you might advise the court that you no longer worked at the address when and where the papers were delivered.
I agree that people can be nosy and love to gossip. Whether that rises to the level of a lawsuit requires more details. The sexual harassment issue is more intriguing and the ties between the harasser and HR might explain the person's looking at and perhaps copying the legal document.
