Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Legal Suspension?

I've been employed at a small restaurant for nine years. After taking to-go orders from the same individual for the past 2 months on every Friday, the person did not show up to pick the order up on one Friday. My tag was stuck in the waitress station with a ''no-show'' written on it. Two weeks later, it's still there but now, one of my bosses has wrote a nasty note on it. Saying ''try taking the name and number down next time!'' He could have simply removed the tag and talked to me. So I wrote a reply, ''try kissing my butt!'' and put it back. It was meant as a playful response. Someone took the tag and hung it on a board in the kitchen. Upon reading this reply, he called my home, on my day off, and ''suspeneded me until he received an apology and that he was going to sue me for defamation of character for putting that on the board for everyone to see.'' I did not put it there. It was meant as a joke between him and I and for no one else to see. What are my rights?
