Letters of reprimand in personel files, Time limits

Is there a time limit on how long a letter of reprimand can be placed in a personel file until it is removed? This would be in a Peace Officers personel file, not maintained by the personel office, but by the Sheriff of the county in the departmental personel files.

under standard CA labor law there is no such time limit but there may be some regulations that apply to government workers that i am not aware of or maybe some union rule.
