Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Lettter of resignation

If a private employer does not renew a contract (i.e., not rehiring for their personal reasons apparently) and they are requesting a letter of resignation from me. I do not need to submit a letter of resignation because they have basically terminated my employment with them, is that correct? On the contrary, they should provide a written notice on my termination?
