Legal Question in Employment Law in California

are they liable

I work for an inventory company and last week we were doing an inventory for a well known auto parts store when two vehicles were broken into and purses stolen. Obviously one of them was mine the other a coworker car, they gained entry by smashing the passenger side windows. Beings i was on company time on private property would my work or perhaps the auto parts store be liable for damages?

Re: are they liable

In order for your employer or the third party company to be held legally liable for the theft of your purse, you would have to prove that the theft was a reasonably foreseeable event and they failed to take preventive measures to avoid this from happening. That is not an easy thing to prove. If you were in a high crime area (you'll have to subpoena police records) and the company knew this but did not provide adequate security, you may have a case against the company.
