Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Libel in a performance review

I was recently let go from my place of employment. I realize that I have little recourse in an at-will state. But, my performance review was modified, changing positive comments to negative comments and ratings reduced in order to justify my release. As this review will be seen by upper management, I believe it will affect my ability to find employment in the future. Does this act constitute libel or defamation of character?
