Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Hi,

I live in state of california.

I worked for a startup and it promised me ownership meaning, no salary but payout as shares. It offered me some 50k shares (worth nothing) and I worked really hard for almost 6-8 months.

I stopped working for it then and recently I came to know that, its illegal to have someone worked without any compensation.

I would like to know if I stand any legal case to ask for monetary compensation for the services I paid?

Thanks.

Actually it is not illegal to give an ownership share as compensation instead of cash. It must be done according to certain rules, however. Best thing for you to do is contact the Dept. of Industrial Relations, Division of Labor Standards Enforcement and give them the details. They will let you know if you have a wage claim or not.
