Legal Question in Employment Law in California

maximum hours worked in a day

my company has an after hours service in place that keeps a tech available to run service calls on equipment from 5:00pm to 10:00pm. However, management is implimenting new after hours service to 24 hours. Is it legal to have one person work a full shift from 8:00am-5:00pm, then have him on call for the duration of the night from 5:00pm to 8:00am the next morning. Our rotations run from Monday to Monday. Whenever I ask about this issue our management tells me that HR is still researching this matter.

Re: maximum hours worked in a day

Yes it is legal. They will owe the employee overtime compensation for the hours worked over eight in the workday.
