Legal Question in Employment Law in California

My mother lives in California and informed her boss that she would be retiring this May 2010. Her boss responded that if she found another employee to replace my mother before that date then she would let my mother go. Is that legal?

Yes. There is no guarantee of continued employment. Most employees are considered terminable at the will of the employer, unless there is a contract that says differently. Even though your mother was being kind by given her employer advance notice, "no good deed goes unpunished", as they say. So it is with some employers.
