Legal Question in Employment Law in California

negligence caused layoffs; employer lied

I was laid off for lack of sufficient business to meet the payroll. There are other factors which I'm not sure if relevant, but briefly: I had asked 3 times if my job was in jeopardy because of the slow-down. All 3 times I was told "no". The most recent of these was 2 days before I actually WAS laid off for LACK OF SUFFICIENT BUSINESS TO MEET THE PAYROLL. I claim owner negligence and mis-management based on the fact that I was not responsible for getting new business. I also claim they IN-MY-FACE lied to me or willfully mis-represented my job status/security. I "covered" for my manager and did many tasks for which I was not compensated. Turns out that this manager had a hand at deciding who would be laid off - ME! Please tell me I do have some recourse?!

Re: negligence caused layoffs; employer lied

Unlikely. Calif. law does not require them to have a reason to lay off or fire someone.
