Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Nepotism

I'm a Shipping Supv for a corp. I supervise 6 people in my department. One of the people I supervise is my nephew. He's been Temping for us for nearly 2 years off and on. I would really like to hire the guy but the HR Dept said I can't because of Nepotism. Is that true?

My understanding of Nepotism is that it has something to do with hiring a family member in favor of somebody more qualified.

2 years ago when he first started that may have been true but the guy has really learned alot in his time here and is a great asset to my dept.

The HR Dept is asking me to hire somebody from outside the company which means we'll have to let my nephew go soon.

If I can't hire him full time then how is it that I have been able to keep him here for nearly 2 years as a Temp and be his supervisor?

Re: Nepotism

It is a company policy, not a law. There is no law against having this type of policy.
