Legal Question in Employment Law in California
Nepotism
I work for a law firm, I have been here for 1 year exactly. I have never been written up or threatened in any way of losing my job. I was recently told by 2 people that I am going to be terminated at the end of the week because the owner of the company wants to give his daughter a job, my job. I am not suppossed to know this information. I was told by my supervisor's boyfriend, who does not work here but felt really sorry for me. I was also told by a secretary after I told her what I had found out. Neither of the 2 know exactly why he wants to fire me, so it's speculation. I was approached 2 weeks ago by my supervisor, she told me (in confidence that I would not say anything) that the boss's daughter is out of work and will be coming to work here soon, but I was not told that I would be terminated. I started here as a temporary worker and was hired permanently about 7 months ago. I have not had any complaints that I am aware of. Please let me know what I can do. I am under alot of stress due to this, I have bills and rent that has to be paid, and this man is palying with my well being, it's unfair. I would appreciate any information as soon as possible, I only have 2 days left. Thank you for your time.

Re: Nepotism
While your situation is unfortunate, you haven't described anything that would give rise to any claims. California is an "at will" employment state, meaning that most employees can be fired and any time for any reason so long is it is not prohibited by law such as racial discrimination. Unless you have a written employment contract or unless you have evidence of an illegal reason the termination, your only remedy is to file for unemploy and look for a new job.
