Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Non Competition agreement

Where can I find more specific information on the law that covers this. What is the actual code. Our company is saying we all signed an agreement stating that we would not quit and go to work for one of our customers if they offered better compensation. They say we would have to wait one year before we could do it. And they also said they would sue us for one years salary if we did. Is this really legal????
