Legal Question in Employment Law in California

My part time employer wants me to sign an agreement preventing me from offering similar services elsewhere. Can he do that? I teach classes in his gym, and now he wants me to sign a "non-compete" agreement with him, even though I only teach there about 10 hours per week. I'd starve if I agreed to such a restriction!

Generally, "every contract by which anyone is restrained from engaging in a lawful profession, trade, or business of any kind is to that extent void." California Business and Professional Code � 16600.

Your part-time employer, however, could terminate your employment.
