Legal Question in Employment Law in California

personal days

our company is changing its ruling on personal days. we currently have 5 personal days that can be used as the employee desires but also includes religious and breavement days. the company is changing the days to be only for religious and bereavement. can they do this? what about people who have no religion or family to die? 2 years ago we only had 3 personal days and 3 days that were actually called bereavement then they were combined. isn't the new ruling discrimination?

Re: personal days

Unless paid days off are contracted for, such as in collective bargaining agreements, there is no requirement that employers grant any time off with pay. Therefore, if they implement such benefits, they have total discretion on what terms or conditions may apply. Although employers cannot take back what has already accrued, they can put you on notice that from here on, new rules apply. Religious accomodation is required by law, under certain circumstances. Bereavement leave is not, but if the employer chooses to allow it, it is not for you to challenge.
