Legal Question in Employment Law in California

If there is no posted schedule, am I required to show up?

I know that sounds irresposible but this is what happened. I needed to take 8 days off to take care of personal business (2 of those days were my regular days off) I asked the store manager who replied "talk to (other MGR) he is in charge of that" so I asked (other MGR) which he said "talk to store MGR". well the store MGR went on vacation. I had plane tickets already, so I went to the manager that was maintaining payroll in the S.M.'s place and she gave me permission to go. Now they are telling me that i had no authorization to go and are taking measures to terminate me even though in the 3 years of employment I have never received any other disciplinary action. My only defense (since the manager who said I can go is denying it for some reason) is that I have been working at night and the night manager has refused to print a work schedule and has been telling us to show up/not show up on the daily basis. If there was no set schedule, how can I miss a scheduled day of work?

HELP!
