Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Pregnancy and a new job

I'm looking for some advice. I've just been offered a new job in outside sales and have accepted. However, they do not know that I'm about 4 weeks pregnant. I'm afraid to tell them, because if they fire me, I cannot pay the rent.

If I wait too long to tell them, when I might be showing, it may be harder to find another job. I don't know when or if I should tell them.

I am an ''at will'' employee, but is it legal for a company to hire me because I tell them I'm pregnant?

Please help. Thank you.

Re: Pregnancy and a new job

There is no need to tell your employer you are pregnant until it is necessary to do so. As a practical matter, it is probably the best time to make the announcement when it becomes obvious, or if you need time off due to your pregnancy. Employers must give up to 4 months off for pregnancy related medical reasons and cannot fire or discriminate against employees because of their pregnancy. You should attempt to prove yourself as a skilled salesperson first, which may make it more difficult for the employer to terminate you for performance reasons. Be aware of all company policies relating to maternity leave. Good luck.
