Legal Question in Employment Law in California
Reason for Termination
We are about to terminate a teacher at
our school for verbal abuse of another
teacher. Should we tell the teacher
specifically why they are being fired?
The teacher is employed at-will.

Re: Reason for Termination
California is an at-will state, which means anyone can quit or be fired for no reason or any reason, as long as it's not illegal, such as discrimination. If your school is not a public school subject to civil service and collective bargaining or employment agreements, etc., an employee would be at will. If you choose to provide an explanation, it's best to put it in writing, with the help of an attorney, so that it can be used as evidence in case a lawsuit results.
