Legal Question in Employment Law in California

i recently applied for a supervisor position in a retail store where i'm currently employed as a clerk. i interviewed and have been doing all the work of a supervisor, but he says that it's a "trial run" and he won't officially promote me for another 2 months. is this normal or legal, to have me do the work and not get properly compensated?
