Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I was recently laid off from my job. Before I left I contacted a few of my clients via email and let them know that I would no longer be working with them. I also gave them my email if they needed any further assistance. Can my company sue me for contacting my clients?

Generally, it is not a violation of the trade secrets act to let former clients know you have moved on. But you are getting into a more cloudy area by suggesting they contact you for any further assistance. If you signed a non-solicitation agreement, this could be interpreted as a solicitation.

This is a very complex area of the law and every case is different depending on the facts. If you are planning on competing with your former employer, you should consult with an employment law attorney in your area, to find out what you can and cannot do.
