Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Recently placed on leave from a job that I held for 2 months. Reason for action I was told was due to a former employer (over 12 years ago that I worked for through a staffing agency) contacting current employer and giving details of my departure from that company (accusations of theft etc which are not true and was news to me as this was the first time I heard of it...no criminal cases etc ever filed). So because the line of work was in the same industry and I did not include that 3 month assignment on my resume or application (did not omit with malice, just simply forgot since it was so long ago) I now face losing my job. What do I do outside of looking for new work? Can I sue former employer or current employer for wrongful termination?

Also, former employer found out about my job based on a former co-worker giving information.

If your former employer lied and you can prove it, you would have one of the few defamation cases that might be worth filing.
