Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Hi, I recently relocated to California from Oregon for a new job. My employer paid me $17K , less taxes as relocation allowances. However my actual relocation costs exceeded this allowance amount since California is way more expensive than Oregon. I had to stay in hotel when my stuff ( beds furniture) was moved. My employer is refusing to cover hotel / dining costs that I incurred when my stuff was moving. My employer was vague about relocation assistance and never specified that hotel/dining costs would not be covered. Do I have a claim ?

It sounds like your employer gave you an allowance, not an agreement to pay all or certain costs. An allowance is an allowance. That's what you get even if it costs you more. An employer has no obligation to pay relocation costs at all in CA, or any state I know of. If they agreed to a 17k allowance and paid it (less taxes since relocation payments are treated as income) they have fulfilled their obligation to you.
