Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Recovering Pension Contirbutions Before Retirement

I have been working for a labor union for over 6 years and have reason to believe that I will be laid off soon. I inquired about recovering the money which was contributed by my employer into my pension plan and was basically told that I was out of luck. The union stated that I needed 10 years to be vested and that I could not collect anything before that ( I couldn't collect anything after that either, until I retired).

Does the union have the right to keep the considerable ($30,000+) contirbutions which my employer has paid into my pension plan?
