Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Reducing Break and Lunch Time

We work M-F 7:30am to 4pm. Our company has let us have a 15-minute break from 9:55am to 10:10 am and a 45 minute lunch from 12:15 to 1pm, with no afternoon break. They just changed it to 10 minutes in the morning and afternoon and 30 minute lunch. I understand that that is legal, but wondered if it's okay to reduce our total break time (was 1 hour), now down to 50 minutes. Any information would be appreciated!

Re: Reducing Break and Lunch Time

The employer's conduct is legal. By statute, most California employers are required to provide two ten minute rest breaks and one thirty minute meal period. However, you and your co-workers may have a claim for missed breaks. Feel free to contact me if you wish to consider such a claim.
