Can I be replaced by being sick for two days?

I worked at this location for 6 years. The store reciently sold thus new owner. I was sick for 2 days and when I came back to work was informed that I had been replaced and my hours reduced to 16 a week. Four days later the boss came to me and said that we are accepting your two week notice(Which I never gave) and handed me my paycheck. Can he do this? What can I do?
