Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Resignation rights

Original job role (July 2000 hired)changed. In new role (Re-defined in Feb 2001)I did not fit or perform to new role expectations. Was put on performance review (March 2001) and given period of two weeks to prove performance to new responsibilities. Decided that even though I attempted to fit new job role I would not be able to sustain performance as my background/experience was not compatible. I resigned at end of two week performance period and gave (6) weeks notice. Was told resignation not accepted unless I reduced notice period to (4) weeks. In California can the employer reduce the notice period?
