Legal Question in Employment Law in California
retaliation terminations
My brother & I worked for the county, & were recently terminated from our employment. We were proficient in what we did, & were valuable employees. I was fired for sending an email to another county employee seeking clarification regarding rumors about fires burning in our area. My brother for merely giving me the email address of the person I wrote. Sending an email was not the problem, as the director for whom I work has encouraged us in the past to use email to communicate with other employees as well as other county agencies, how the administration handled it was. From what I've gathered the email embarrassed & enraged the CAO. My brother was immediately suspended for 3 & 1/2 days without pay & was given a corrective plan of action by his supervisor, who also happens to be the CAO's son-in-law. 2 days later he was told they had decided to terminate him. He was first given the option to resign, & was told he would be given a good reference. This has been hell for both of us & our family. We have the support of coworkers & the community who have been made aware of the situation via the local newspaper. We have both appealed our terminations. We would appreciate any suggestions you may be able to offer.
