If I am a salary exempt employee and my boss calls me and tells me I have the day off because there is no work am I still entitled to be paid for that day?

No. Absent a personal employment contract guaranteing a certain number of paid days of work, an employer is free to furlough an employee at any time. As long as you are told in advance not to show up for work, you get no pay. If you had not been warned and had showed up and been sent home, you would be entitled to 1/2 day pay.
