Legal Question in Employment Law in California
School Year Contract
I work for a private school that requires me to sign a contract in March for the following school year. The contract states that I must work the entire year and that the contract may not be canceled except in the case of termination of the teacher by the school for cause. This makes it difficult to seek public school employment because final hiring usually isn't until May. Also I am worried about the future of the school given the present economy. I would have a easier time of being place - if I apply now and leave mid-year. Is this contract binding?

Re: School Year Contract
Not really because of the constitutional prohibition against slavery. In certain situations, you maybe enjoined from performing skills that are unique to you. Employment contracts generally shield the employee from being fired w/out cause but employees can generally leave without fear of litigation absent trade secrets or violation of confidentiality agreements.
