Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Severance pay for job downsized before start?

I signed a letter of intent to work at a company for a given salary for a given length of time. I found out three weeks before I was to start that the company had downsized and the position for which I was hired no longer existed. I could not be relocated within the company. What rights do I have? I was left without a job, without a home, without insurance and without a way to pay for costs that I incurred for my relocation (I live in MI and was relocating to CA.) Do they owe me anything?

Re: Severance pay for job downsized before start?

You may have a claim under California Labor Code Section 970, which prohibits employers from misrepresenting a job to an aplicant who must move his or her residence. Damages may be recoverable. Consult an experianced labor attorney to discuss the specific facts of your case.
