Shared Cash Drawer- Reimbursement for Shortages
Can an employer force employees to pay back any cash shortages if they are using a shared cash drawer? Some of the employees only enter the cash drawer to get change for customers; but when there is a shortage of money at the end of the night, all employees who were in the drawer are required to reimburse the shortage amount devided by the number of employees in the drawer that day. Is this legal?

Re: Shared Cash Drawer- Reimbursement for Shortages
Absolutely not! It is illegal to charge an employee for cash shortages unless the employee was guilty of gross negligence, which does not appear to be the case with you. If you have been charged back any cash shortages, you should file a claim with the California Labor Commission, or see a labor law attorney near you as soon as possible.
