Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Slander by former employee.

I was recently laid off by a big company due to a down turn in sales(as I was told). I found out later that something I said in my exit interview was told to a future potential employee. I thought if an individual is laid off due to a down turn in sales that is all that can be said if there is an inquirey to my past employment history. Is that true? I also found out that a few more employees at the company I previously worked at have also spoke about my employment history. It is company policy that all inquiries should go thru H.R. dept. What do you think?

Re: Slander by former employee.

Most employers keep it safe by not giving more, however, if facts true as given, not illegal. As to info by former co-employees, no restriction unless info not true and it can then be defamatory. Since I do not know specifics, cannot completely answer your questions. 800-685-6950
