Legal Question in Employment Law in California
Slander at the workplace
I am a new General Manager at a retail store and I have an Assistant who constantly slanders my reputation at work. This assistant wanted the position but did not get it. She became very jealous. I have had 5 documented discussions/meetings with her about her unprofessional attitude. I even asked my District Manager to step in and speak with her, but the Assitant is still bitter and determined to make work miserable. Her negative attitude is affecting the entire staff What are my rights? Can I personally sue her for defamation of character.

Re: Slander at the workplace
You can sue her for defamation of character, however it might be easier to terminate her employment, assuming company policy will permit.

I suggest you fire her for insubordination. I hope the situation improves for you-Martin
