Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Slandered by a resident

I am a resident apartment manager for a large financial corporation. Recently, I had to give one of my residents a rent increase which we do for all our residents annually.

This resident on learning he was going to get a rent increase left me three threatening and abusive and harrasssing messages accusing me of being a racist, I have his messages on tape, he also reported me to my company accusing me of the above. My company is aware of this resident and also taped his messages for their files. I feel I have been slandered by this resident. He was going to move out but he cannot find anywhere to live so he is staying here. This whole matter has left me very stressed, I have MS and stress in this condition is not good for me, what recourse do I have on the above, any help is greatly appreciated in advance.

Re: Slandered by a resident

If your employer knows what kind of tenant this person is, let the employer handle it, possibly through their legal counsel. It won't do you any good to take matters in your own hands and might make things worse.

The chances are if you sued him yourself, you'd get nothing out of it and just cost you money and frustration. It might also create a wedge between you and your employer.

If you have witnesses who can provide statements about this resident, give their names to your employer and let them build a case against him, so that if he cries discrimination, they will have a defense. Keep notes and do not talk about him with anyone other than the employer.

Good luck.
