Legal Question in Employment Law in California

We are a small business. We hired a contractor through a middle man/ agency. We have a contract with the middle man and the contractor has a separate independent contract with the middle man. We receive invoices from the middle man for work done, we pay the middle man and the middle man then pays the contractor. The contractor notified us that the middle man has not paid him for the last invoice we already paid. We now have a new outstanding invoice from the middle man, but given that he has not honored his commitment to our contractor for the last invoice we paid we do not want to pay the new invoice. Are we legally liable given that he has not honored his agreement with our contractor? What are our legal obligations and what documentation do we need to be legally covered? Thank you
