Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Getting suspended for telling about your Christmas bonus

Can my company suspend me for telling other employees that I got a Christmas bonus that I did not know I was going to recieve? I just assumed everyone elso got a bonus and since I had never received one before I got excited and mentioned to a few co-workers.

Now the company wants to suspend me for three days for telling others about my bonus not the amount. I have never signed anything stating that I would not share this information. Should I give the bonus (gift)back in lieu of being suspended the three days or can they even suspend me legally after giving me a gift? Confused at Christmas

Re: Getting suspended for telling about your Christmas bonus

There is a law in California that prohibits employers from preventing employees from discussing their wages with others. I think a good argument can be made that would include bonuses, but the law is not specific on that point. Ultimately, what you decide to do depends on what is more important to you, being right under the law, or how your employer views you as an employee.
